Nagmaal Boxed Wine

Nagmaal Boxed Wine is a package design that I did for a project. This project was my entry for Gold Pack in 2013 and won a Student Silver Loerie.

The aim of the brief was to come up with a product that is aimed at a specific target market and to design the packaging in such a way that it would most effectively appeal to the target market. The target market for Nagmaal consists mainly of people between the ages of 21 to 30 who were raised in primarely Calvinist homes. This demographic would remember long Sundays when they would watch the adults take part in the Mass in church, known as Nagmaal in Afrikaans, and how they would pretend to do the same afterward while the adults socialize tediously.

Nagmaal aims to revive that feeling of playfull naughtyness of those who remember trying to make off with some of the left-over bread and wine after church.

The Nagmaal wine box consists of two parts, the first being the outer, main box. This part features heavenly illustrations that creates a feeling of playfulnes. This main box houses the wine bag. To reveal the spout a fig leaf at the front of the box is torn out, the spout is then pulled out. On both sides and the back of the main box there are cup holders that can also be pulled out. When extended, the cupholders are reminiscent of wings.

The second part of the Nagmaal wine box is the compartment that houses the cups. This part can be puled out by loosening latches at the bottom of the box. It features more macabre and diabolical illustrations. The cups housed inside the box are folded out of paper and are good for one use. The cup compartment also lifts the spout up just enough so that the cups can easily be placed underneath so that the box does not need to be perched on the edge of a table or held in one hand to pour.
